How We Use AI in Architecture
A tool, not the designer
Architecture has always evolved alongside its tools. Hand drawing gave way to CAD, CAD developed into BIM, and increasingly sophisticated modelling and visualisation have changed how we explore and communicate buildings. We see artificial intelligence as the next addition to that toolkit. At Varloch Design, we actively explore AI across design, research, visualisation, project coordination and the systems that support our practice. It can help us investigate possibilities quickly, interrogate information and remove repetitive work that would otherwise take time away from design. But speed is not the objective. Architecture still requires judgement, experience, curiosity and an understanding of people and place. AI can generate possibilities; it cannot replace the responsibility of the designer. Our approach is therefore simple: use new technology where it genuinely makes the process better, while keeping human judgement at the centre of every decision.

Explore more possibilities
Early design is about asking questions. Could the plan work differently? How might the building respond to its surroundings? Is there another way to solve the problem? AI gives us another medium through which to investigate those questions. Alongside sketches, physical references, BIM and 3D modelling, we can use generative tools to explore ideas and communicate possibilities quickly. The important distinction is that generating an image is not the same as designing a building. Outputs are reviewed, challenged and developed by the designer against the realities of the brief, site, planning controls, budget, construction and environment. AI expands the conversation. Architectural judgement determines what is worth pursuing.

Work smarter behind the scenes
Some of the greatest opportunities for AI are less visible. Architectural projects generate enormous amounts of information: drawings, specifications, consultant reports, planning controls, meeting records, programmes, correspondence and decisions. We use technology to help organise and interrogate that information, identify inconsistencies and reduce repetitive administrative work. We are also continually developing our own digital systems and workflows to improve how projects are coordinated. The goal isn't automation for its own sake. It is to give designers more time for the work that requires human attention: thinking, communicating, resolving problems and making good decisions.

Keep people at the centre
We don't believe the future of architecture is a choice between people and technology. The opportunity is to combine both. AI can process information quickly, generate alternatives and assist with repetitive tasks. Architects bring context, judgement, empathy, technical knowledge and responsibility for the decisions that shape a project. At Varloch Design, every design decision remains guided and reviewed by people. We question the outputs of the tools we use rather than accepting them simply because they were generated quickly. Technology will continue to change. Our responsibility remains the same: understand the problem, make considered decisions and create architecture that improves the way people live.
