Who we are

Varloch Design is a Sydney-based design practice focused on creating thoughtful, highly resolved architecture and a better experience for the people behind each project. Founded and directed by Kobus Smit, the practice brings together experience across residential, commercial, education, sport and public architecture in Australia and South Africa. Our work begins with listening. We want to understand how our clients live, what matters to them, what makes their site unique and what they hope the project can become. From there, we combine design thinking with rigorous documentation, digital modelling and clear project management. We believe beautiful architecture and disciplined delivery should never be separate ideas. The quality of the finished building depends on both.

How we work

We see architecture as a journey rather than a collection of isolated stages. From feasibility and the first sketch through planning, design development, documentation and construction, each decision influences what follows. Our role is to maintain that continuity while giving our clients clarity about where their project stands and what happens next. Technology plays an important role in that approach. We work in detailed digital building models and use Mudo, a project and practice management platform created by Kobus, to connect information, communication, programme, decisions and project delivery. The technology sits quietly behind the architecture. Its purpose is simple: reduce fragmentation, improve coordination and give our team more time to think carefully about the project itself.

The thinking behind Varloch Group

Varloch Design forms part of a broader idea: Varloch Group. The ambition is to think beyond the traditional boundaries of an architectural practice and build a connected approach to design, technology and project delivery. For our clients, that means we consider more than how a building looks. We think about how it will be approved, documented, coordinated and ultimately built. Consultants, builders and clients need to work from the same understanding if a strong design is to become a strong building. Varloch is still evolving, and that is intentional. We continue to test new tools, improve our systems and challenge how architectural services can be delivered. The objective remains straightforward: thoughtful architecture, clear communication and a better journey from the first idea to the finished place.
